Slater was secretary to the late Col. Robert R. McCormick, editor and publisher. She retired after Col. McCormick's death on April 1, 1955.

Mrs. Slater was the widow of John F. Slater, a city employe. Survivors are her parents, Jeremiah and Mrs. Ann Murray; two sisters and a brother.
