What is the best month to go to New Orleans? ›

The best time to visit New Orleans is from February to May when the weather is comfortably cool and the celebrations are in full swing. If you're not interested in Mardi Gras mania, plan to visit in December or January, when the city is calm and you don't have to worry about making hotel reservations a year in advance.

New Orleans has a subtropical climate thanks to its proximity to large bodies of water. In fact, it's the most humid city in the USA. This means the air will likely feel dense and muggy, especially in the summer when the average humidity is a sweat-inducing 76%.

July is when New Orleans really starts to heat up. If you're planning on visiting in July, opt for light and airy clothing. Make sure to bring out your best red for the Running of the Bulls! There's a chance of a few light showers so umbrellas are a good idea just in case.

New Orleans is one of the rainiest cities in the country, with an average of 62 inches of rain each year. Some rain events can be especially heavy, with many inches of rain falling in an hour. That's the bad news. The good news is that it's a lot more affordable to stay in New Orleans during the summer months, plus the crowds are a lot smaller. While you may not want to spend as much time outdoors, these months there's still a lot to see and do.
