Recipe for Winter Fruit Salad – A Dixie Salad Tradition

This recipe for winter fruit salad is a holiday tradition from my Uncle who was raised in a pomegranate growing area including a section of Nevada, north of Las Vegas and southern Utah. Known as “Dixie”, southern Utah was named for the warm climate and cotton crops reminiscent of the deep south.

It was the Dixie Salad I looked forward to every holiday season. I have now brought that tradition to my own family and introduced it to my husband's family. It makes a lovely light dessert or with yummy ingredients like these, you can feel good about serving it at the dinner table!

Peel, Seed, and Chop Winter Fruits

De-seed your pomegranates.

I like to do it the old fashioned way:

  • Cut each pomegranate lightly from crown all the way around {longitudinal} making sure to pierce the bottom and top where the fruit skin is thickest
  • Gently pull halves apart and let seeds fall into bowl
  • Continue breaking sections apart and pulling seeds away from the white membrane
  • Many claim faster ways to do this but I've found them messy and spend more time pulling off tiny pieces of the white pith for a nice clean bowl of pomegranate seeds

*Wear a dark colored shirt while seeding to avoid stains. But if you do get some juice on your clothing it comes out easily by carefully pouring boiling water over the stain.

Peel and Dice Apples.

Chop pecans

Or purchase pecan pieces. I like using my nut grinder to do a large batch in just a few minutes.

Add Whipped Cream for Creamy Fruit Salad

You can make your own whipped cream, dairy free coconut cream shown – recipe here, or purchase Cool Whip or Dairy Free So Delicious Whipped Topping. Carefully fold whipped cream or topping into the winter fruit salad until fully incorporated.

Dixie Salad – Pomegranate Fruit Salad

Winter Fruit Salad pretty enough for the holiday table but light and delicious.

Prep Time30 minutes mins

Total Time30 minutes mins

Course: Dessert

Cuisine: American

Keyword: Dairy free, gluten free, Healthy holiday, healthy treat

Servings: 8 1/2 cup servings

Calories: 131kcal

Ingredients

  • 2 Pomegranates seeded
  • 2 Honeycrisp Apples peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup Pecans chopped
  • 8 oz Whipped Cream or Cool Whip Topping Sub Coconut Whipped Cream for dairy-free

Instructions

  • Cut each pomegranate lightly from crown all the way around making sure to pierce the bottom and top of fruit. Gently pull halves apart and let seeds fall into bowl. Wear a dark colored shirt while seeding to avoid stains.

  • Continue breaking sections apart and pulling seeds away from the white membrane. Many claim faster ways to do this but I've found them messy and ineffective.

  • After seeding each pomegranate set aside a few seeds.

  • Wash apples with fruit spray, then peel and slice. Finally, dice them into bite size pieces. Add to bowl.

  • Chop pecans and add to bowl.

  • Fold in whipped cream or whipped topping and mix well with rubber scraper until all fruit is covered and whipped cream is well incorporated.

  • Top with a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds and chopped pecans. Best served chilled the same day.

  • Dixie fruit salad will still be good the next day but whipped cream will start to separate so add a little more whipped cream and remix before serving.

Notes

If you do get a pomegranate juice stain on your clothes CAREFULLY use boiling water to get it out before it sets.
