She and her husband had planned to use the money saved from their family business to move to California, but her husband died three years ago. The couple had lived through the Depression and were afraid of losing their money in a savings account. The woman got a call Thursday morning from a man who said he was a police sergeant. The man "asked her to call 911 immediately and ask for a man who was investigating a confidential case.
Police said that although the woman dialed the emergency number, she was still connected with her initial caller because he had not hung up the phone. The caller told her someone was exchanging the money in her box for counterfeit money, and he advised her to withdraw her savings to be used as evidence. Another man who claimed to be an executive with the bank said she should cooperate with the police. The woman removed the money and went to a nearby restaurant as instructed. A man approached her in the parking lot, showed her a badge and identified himself as the investigating officer.
He took the $80,000, put it in a briefcase and walked toward the bank, police said. He called her when she arrived home and said he would be in touch with her Friday. That, police said, was the last time she heard from him. UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL JACKSONVILLE A 73-year-old woman who kept her life savings in a safe-deposit box because she feared another Great Depression lost her $80,000 to con men, officials said Saturday. At least two men were involved, one posing as a police officer and another as a bank executive, police 'said.
5 The con the men used was a variation of the "bank examiner scam." The swindlers are highly trained members of a large organization, Detective Doug Scott said. "They are very, very sophisticated," said Scott, They are very, very sophisticated. They are the cream of the crop when it comes to swindlers. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, she moved to St. Paul, with her family in 1910.
She married dentist William Kubat in 1917 and moved with him to Orlando after he retired in 1951. Kubat died in 1960. After marrying Polasek in 1961, the couple established the Polasek Foundation in Winter Park. The sculptor died in 1965. Mrs.
Polasek encouraged her husband to continue sculpting after a stroke crippled his legs and right hand, said her stepson, Donald Kubat, of Oakland, Calif. A nephew, William Muska of Naples, said she also was an exceptional storyteller. She wrote her autobiography in the early 1980s. Polasek created a sculpture of his wife in 1961 as a wedding gift. A bronze cast of the figure stands in a reflecting pool in Central Park.
In addition to Kubat and Muska, her survivors include nephews, Henry and Rudy Muska of St. Paul, and Henry Muska of California; nieces, Valsta Muska, Elsa Bennet, Helene Herschell and Emily Ellingboe, all of St. Paul. They settled in Phillips, Wisconsin and began Me in America under primitive conditions. In later years they sought cultural and business opportunities in St. Paul. Emily was married in 191 7 to Dr. William Kubat.
After his retirement in 1951 they moved to Orlando, Fla. They became friends of well-known Sculptor, Albin Polasek. At the time of Dr. Kubat's death in 1960. Emily seriously considered returning to St.
Paul but AJbin Polasek encouraged her to stay and in 1961 they were married. Emily become an enthusiastic supporter and encouraged Albin to continue to create new paintings and sculptures. They also established the Polasek Foundation, which exists today to encourage young artists and sculptors and to show a collection of Albin's work to the public at the Gallery, 633 Osceola Winter Park. She was chairman of the Board of the Polasek Foundation. Her home and the gallery attracts thousands of visitors, who experience the beauty and magnitude of Albin Polasek's Art and Sculpture.
